It is not the relaxing, soothing movie one would like to see on a sultry summer night, it is certainly an odd movie, that however leaves some thought-provoking hints. It's a movie that makes one reflect upon the oppressive condition of people living alongside trafficked roads, and it gets to convey this idea of oppression, only sometimes relieved by a jazz and classical soundtrack and by some scenes which prove funny . There are however some unhealthy traits inside this family even before the opening of the highway, mainly concerning too much intimacy shared by its members, which I really did not understand and by the way found disturbing. The mother, too, very well interpreted by Isabelle Huppert , seems to be incapable to face the world, and afraid of any contact with anything outside the house, and does seem completely mentally sane. The movie gets more and more claustrophobic and suffocating, until a kind of "liberating" finale, which is however open to interpretation. A quirky movie indeed, which reminded me how lucky I am to live in a quiet town, far from traffic and noise.
Michel the father goes off to work every morning in the green Volvo station wagon. (“Today is whites day.”) There's horseplay in the bathtub, which the family seems to share rather freely. Hen Myriam (Leïla Bekhti) and her husband, Paul , employ the unflappable and serene Louise as the new nanny for their two children, they don’t anticipate how essential she will become to the smooth running of the household. And for her part, Louise embraces her status as honorary family member a little too eagerly. But while Louise is not all she seems, she’s not well written enough as a character to register as anything more than a string of button-pushing plot devices.

Generally speaking, Palud has a good eye for the coarseness of country folk and life. Victor Seguin’s unadorned cinematography, which seems to use only available light while saturating the colors, is the perfect choice for the muggy, near-oppressive countryside summer during which the story is set. This is a family where the bathtub is shared by parents and children without any question of modesty on anyone's part. Judith, the older daughter loves to sunbathe in the space next to the house clad in a bikini. Judith object when a conservative swim suit arrive for her sister Marion.
Her sister Marion, who is scary smart but thinks too much, worries about the level of lead in the new environment, which Judith ignores as she continues smoking cigarettes. However, Marion does get to her younger brother Julien and they both walk to the school bus which has turned into an adventure, the only one he still has as most of his playmates have vanished. The problem for all concerned is not the level of noise which is manageable but that they are being watched constantly. And just as the remote location turns out to be no permanent remedy for this family's ills, neither is the highway for the motorists since they still have to deal with the occasional traffic jam to which Judith is actually blameless. It's more than a family living near a highway.
The subjects covered are well chosen and diverse, and you really get perspective on how widespread and potentially devastating our manipulation of the natural world has become. Perhaps it may seem that I overstate my appreciation for this movie. But, when you see the extraordinary compilation of beauty, work and effort that went into creating this work of ART, you may agree. It spotlights one case in history to show what happens when a society doesn't react to the damage it is doing to its own environment. Probably one of the best movies of 2009 and one of the best documentaries of the year as well.
Kacey Mottet Klein who plays the little boy Julien is an amazing actor. In one scene he begged his Mom to let him out of being locked in the bathroom. I could not stand that frail little character entombed with the rest of that wacko family. The ending of this incredible story is also baffling, - BEWARE SPOILER - and I would say painful, when the elder daughter, who "escaped" from her home, for the reason you can guess !!! Since the location is so strange, it turns out that the house and highway are actually in Bulgaria, although a number of other countries were scouted. And the ending which may appear obvious to many people can actually be open to interpretation.
It is fantasy in that it lets you suspend realism for a moment, and dwell on the things we take for granted many times- laughter, romance, and childlike innocence. This movie made me smile, and I have no need to question motivations etc. It would be absurd to questions things that are meant to be left alone in their wonder.
Marthe, who has been the most affected by the changes in their lives, wakes up one day and begin to take free herself and the others from the madness they have endured. Director Ursula Meier's work here is reminiscent of Luis Bunuel in one of his less playful moods, as she focuses on a group of everyday people trapped in a surrealistic nightmare from which they are unable to awaken. It is definitely a case in which the scene becomes an integral reflection of the psychological states of the characters. There are two questions never answered in the French film “Home.” How did this family come to live here? And why does the mother fiercely refuse to leave, even after a four-lane freeway opens in her front yard? Both are more satisfactory remaining as questions.
movie reviewsAfter watching this movie though, I'll admit that I had mostly forgotten the flaws because it really forces you to think about the issues. This is a good thing, and for the most part it is done with beauty, sensitivity and grace, which is why I've given it such a high rating. Watch this movie- the cinematography and well crafted narrative will open your eyes to the fragile state of our planet and cause you to appreciate your place in it more. Just don't be a sucker for the slightly anti-human philosophy.
I can only imagine what's in the second half... Do they start kicking over senior citizens in wheelchairs? This bittersweet comedy about love is in line with great recent French movies such as Amelie or L'Auberge Espagnole, But Jeux d'Enfants is not trying to copy any of the previous. In fact, it is one of the most original movies I've seen lately. Overall, Petite Maman tells a sweet story that is shot sharply, with every frame giving the audience something to feed off.
